When you think of a chef’s role, long hours in a hot kitchen, shouting, swearing and high stress may spring to mind… Well, that’s not what it’s like being a chef at THE PIG.

THE PIG hotels are really restaurants with rooms with a commitment to home grown and local produce.

Our menus are written around what is grown in our walled Kitchen Gardens or delivered to the door from local suppliers–creating our 25 mile menu concept. It is all about the kitchen gardens, they are the beating heart of the operation… everything is driven by the gardener/forager and chef – they grow and find the food – then chef creates the menu.

The menus change by the minute, depending on what the forager supplies and what the Kitchen Garden team deems to be in perfect condition. Our food style is driven by home grown and unfussy clarity of flavour, true to the seasons and influenced by our surrounding local areas. The distinctive characters and unique combinations of ancient woodland and agricultural farmland, some of the hotels also being within casting distance of the sea, means we have access to some of the freshest local fish, amazing meats, award-winning cheeses and English wines in the country!
Our kitchens run on a brigade of 18 chefs, each overseen by our Chef Director James Golding.

By offering a variety of flexible shift patterns, we want you to enjoy coming to work but equally enjoy your time off! Chefs work early and late shifts and many of our kitchens work a 4 day on/3 day off rota.

The kitchen team work alongside fantastic local suppliers, producers and butchers and we offer tailored development and training to suit you and your real interests. Of course, there’s the serious stuff – Food Safety, Food Hygiene, COSHH and Manual Handling for examples – but there’s also a lot of fun stuff too, including:

  • Craft training including butchery, charcuterie, fish, pasta and bread masterclasses
  • Foraging with local experts
  • Weekly Kitchen Garden tours and harvesting workshops
  • An environment with livestock such as pigs, chickens, sheep, quail and bees
  • Visits to local suppliers
  • Regular tasting of new dishes and ingredients
