Training & Development

PIG Pathways

Not only do we grow produce for our menus, but we are also passionate about home growing our people too; using local hand-picked training partners and our own bespoke programmes and trainers to deliver development pathways for all. At THE PIG, it’s not all about going up the ladder – more like choosing the right path… for you!

Every team member has access to training and development under our five PIG Pathways – recognising, promoting, and nurturing transferable skills within our profession. Our five pathways can each be linked, and even revisited, to create personal development plans lasting years…

Pathway 1: Hone Your Craft

This could be the first path you take, or the one you come back to anytime your craft changes, or you finish another path. Honing your craft could be upskilling in your area of expertise – wine, foraging, butchery, local knowledge – or simply settling into a new role.

Craft training is a part of our DNA, from wine and food tastings with our own experts, to supplier trips and visits – visiting a local vineyard or distillery, learning to make cheese, chocolate, or bread with industry experts, attending a housekeeping trade show, or even exploring wineries in Italy!

We offer a range of certifications and qualifications – whether your ambition is to achieve WSET qualifications in wines and spirits, qualify as a beekeeper, become a Mental Health First Aider, or gain a personal license to run your own bar one day.

Pathway 2: PLANT

We develop our managers of the future through PLANT – meaning People Leaders Adding New Talents! This programme provides monthly classroom training sessions in all the key areas a well-rounded manager needs – a clear pathway for professional development over the course of 12 months.

And alongside PLANT, we run virtual bitesize sessions each month on a whole range of interesting topics, open to anyone and everyone.

Pathway 3: PIG Apprenticeships

Our award-winning apprenticeship programmes provide people of any age with an accredited training pathway which will enable them to develop unique knowledge and skills – and they are not your average apprenticeships!

Our Chefs experience and learn about everything we do – from managing kitchen gardens, foraging, animal husbandry, beekeeping, advanced butchery, charcuterie to smoke houses, and more!

Click here to read more about our kitchen apprenticeships.

Our Front of House apprentices meet monthly for training days – covering topics such as ‘Inspiration Leadership’, ‘Understanding Finance’, ‘Coaching and Feedback’ – whilst enjoying curated days out to learn more about our fantastic industry.

Level 2 Team member, Level 3 Supervisor & Level 4 Hospitality Manager apprenticeships are available – whilst specialising in wine, bar, housekeeping, restaurant, or reception. Our apprenticeships can be revisited or started at different points in your career, for example: Bartender: L2, Bar Supervisor: L3, Bar Manager: L4.

Pathway 4: Homegrown Entrepreneurs

Through our ‘Homegrown Entrepreneur’ scheme, we aim to develop multi-skilled leaders of the future who could run our hotels, or their own one day!

Starting by mucking in with the team, our entrepreneurs spend time in all operational areas of the business to gain a deep understanding of how every department plays their part in our success. They also regularly collaborate on exciting projects and pitch their ideas to the senior leaders – such as industry trends and change, organising events or launching a new product.

It’s about showing an interest in developing through participation, leadership, hard work, a commitment to learning and having fun along the way – the only requirement is a passion for our industry.

Pathway 5: Upskilling Leaders

You’re never too far along in your profession to stop developing yourself. As one of our leaders, there will be an expectation to upskill and motivate those around you, but what’s engaging you…

  • Coaching and mentoring others?
  • Networking within the wider industry?
  • Furthering your education? i.e. Master Innholders
  • Attending (or hosting!) seminars, webinars, and masterclasses?

And more!
